Knowing the different kinds of jackets and how to purchase one is important when considering this important clothing layer.

Jackets are an important part of a clothing layer system to stay comfortable outdoors. They retain body heat, and can help a camper stay dry during a snowstorm or downpour. There are also a lot of different kinds of jackets when it comes to materials, cut, and function.

The Lightweight Shell Jacket

These shell jackets are useful for those who are doing high-energy exercise, such as running. They are thin, but can retain heat when the body is active as well as repel some water. These kinds of jackets can be useful for those who want to go on a day hike.

The Fleece Jacket

A fleece jacket can be worn by itself, or as an insulating layer as part of a system. Fleece jackets are made from synthetic materials that allow the wearer to stay warm even if the jacket is wet, and will dry more quickly than cotton clothing. These jackets come in varying thicknesses, with some having hoods, or have materials sewn in to keep out the wind.

The Soft-Shell Jacket

The soft-shell is different from a fleece jacket in that instead of having a fuzzy feeling to the material, the jacket is made of smoother cloth. They are designed to not only retain heat, but can also repel water. This feature allows hikers to combine a heat-retaining piece of clothing and a rain jacket into one item, which saves weight. However, in a torrential downpour, the water will soak through.

Rain Jackets

A rain jacket is made of synthetic material that repels water, while keeping the body dry. Most jackets intended for outdoor recreation use are designed to repel water from the outside while allowing body moisture to pass through the material and evaporate. Some jackets are lightweight, with only one layer of material. These are used during spring, summer, and early fall. During the winter months, a thicker jacket that not only keeps off moisture, but also helps to retain heat.

How to Buy A Jacket

When shopping for jackets or coats, keep these shopping tips in mind.

  • Buy the right jacket for the kind of activity it will be used for. Will it be worn primarily during warmer months, or the winter?
  • Try the jacket on to get the right idea as to how it fits. Are the sleeves too long? Does it have the right coverage?
  • Consider how the jacket will fit as part of an overall system to stay warm and dry. Is there enough room underneath to fit extra layers? Is it so big that it won’t fit under a rain jacket?
  • Consider the price. Is it necessary to buy a $400 jacket or coat? Is the store offering a sale or discount right now?
