How to Buy a Backpacking or Camping Tent

Buying a Tent in the Store, Online, and What to Do Before Camping

Mar 27, 2009 Bill Sassani

Know what to look for when buying a tent and what to do when buying one in a store or online.

Buying a tent is a significant, long-term investment. The tent needs to keep the user dry and comfortable for many years. It also has to have enough room for the occupants, while also being light enough to carry. When shopping for a tent, keep these ideas in mind.

Things to Think About When Buying a Tent

Before buying a tent, think about how the tent will be used. There are many kinds of backpacking and camping tents, so knowing what to shop for can give focus to the search. For instance:

  • Will the tent be carried for six months on the Appalachian Trail, or will be used primarily for weekend trips or car camping?
  • How many people will be sleeping in the tent?
  • What time of year will the tent
  • What kind of price range is acceptable?

Buying a Tent in the Store

When buying a tent, especially for the first time or for a new type of tent, it can be a good idea to visit the local gear store. This has several advantages, which include:

  • Set up the tent in the store. This allows the user a hands-on approach to see how the tent works before actually buying it. Is the tent easy to set up, or are there a lot of parts? Imagine setting it up in a rainstorm instead of inside.
  • Stretch out inside the tent to get a feel for what it would be like to sleep inside it. Does the head or feet press up against the walls? Does the tent feel claustrophobic or too roomy?
  • Ask the salesperson questions about the tent. They can get a feel for one’s needs are and match those with what is available in stock.
  • Check to see if the tent comes with a footprint and stakes. If not, it may be necessary to buy these separately.
  • Does the manufacturer provide a warranty?

Buying a Tent Online

Consider buying online if replacing a tent, purchasing spare parts, or if one has a lot of experience and knowledge of one’s camping needs. Websites such as REI have features that allow different views of products, and as well as detailed information.

Setting Up the Tent Before Going Camping

Before going on that camping trip or backpacking expedition, set up the tent at home. Even if this was done in the store when purchasing it, setting up the tent again helps one get used to it and familiar with the setup process. It can also be a great time to set up any extra guy lines that came with the tent. Knowing how the gear works at home will save a lot of time and energy when in the backcountry.
