When backpackers pack the proper backpacking gear, they can enjoy hiking with nature in comfort.

Backpacking is a fun way to get close to nature and travel to places others don’t often get to see. If the backpack is too heavy, it’s not fun and backpackers won’t get far, so it’s important to learn how to pack light. These tips will help save backs and allow backpackers to enjoy their travels.

Take Only the Essentials

This is hard for beginners to sort out at first, but consider bringing less clothing and smaller and lighter items. Polyester clothing is lighter and more sensible than cotton because cotton holds water and gets colder faster. Definitely bring extra socks and waterproof clothing. Other backpacking essentials include food, a sleeping bag, water bottle, map, compass and first aid kit.

Pack Light Food

Granola, dried fruit, trail mix and beef jerky are extremely filling and not as heavy as canned food. Also consider oatmeal, biscuits and powdered milk. Bring a day's supply of food even if it's a short trip, because bad weather or getting lost or stuck is a possibility. It’s sensible to include wild berries in a backpacker's diet, but don’t count on them because animals might find the berries first.

Backpack With a Friend

This provides company, extra safety and the opportunity of carrying the load together. One tent will suffice and toiletries and cooking items can be shared. If going alone, it’s even more important to pack only necessary items, so plan ahead with a detailed list. Also, make sure friends know the location of the back packing trip and when to expect the backpacker home.

Purchase a Lightweight Backpack

It’s possible to find a sturdy lightweight backpack, because sporting stores specialize in them for backpackers. Consider the price, but backpackers should remember they’re paying for a long-term purchase. Stick with a reputable brand of lightweight backpack to increase the chance that it won’t fall apart. It’s no fun getting a backpacking bargain if it’s low quality or uncomfortable. Also, try the backpack on to make sure it’s comfortable first. The shorter the backpacking trip, the smaller the lightweight backpack needs to be, although hikers can get by with much less than they think.

Use Creativity When Backpacking

There is more than one use for a knife, rope or mirror. It’s surprising how inventive backpackers become when they have less baggage to deal with. Remember to pack warm clothing, sunblock, insect repellent and a whistle for emergencies. Plastic whistles are better in the winter because they won't freeze the lips. These are small things, but contribute towards a backpacker’s comfort and survival.
