Multi-purpose backpacking gear is just what the word implies; gear that can be used for more than one thing.

Backpackers and hikers are always looking for ways to lighten their load. Show them a multi-purpose piece of gear and watch them smile.

What is Multi-purpose Backpacking Gear?

Multi-purpose backpacking gear is just what the word implies; gear that can be used for more than one thing. Some gear can be used in surprising ways that are far outside what they were manufactured to do.

A backpacker is even willing to carry a slightly heavier item if it is multi-functional. The Swiss Army style knife is a great example. Definitely heavier than other knives its myriad of blades, screwdrivers, awls, tweezers, toothpick and even corkscrew makes the weight worth it.

Some gear is logically multi-purpose while alternate uses may hide within other items.

Poncho is for More Than Just Rain

Rain gear is essential in some seasons and areas. Backpackers and hikers that opt for the trendy rain suits get just that, a suit to wear in the rain. When it isn't raining the suit has no purpose, a poncho (Pic #1) does.

  • Shade from the sun.
  • Setup a windbreak.
  • A blind for wildlife photography. Use the head hole to shoot through.
  • Ground cloth.
  • Use as a tent vestibule.
  • Outer blanket layer over a sleeping bag.
  • Line a hole to collect water in survival situations.

Trek Poles Aren't Just for Hiking

Backpackers and hikers love and respect the technologically advanced walking stick, the trek pole (Pic #2). It makes traversing rough country easier. Another common use is as a pole to prop up a tent fly.

  • A fishing pole by adding line and a hook. A small reel and guides for casting can be added.
  • Temporary tent pole.
  • Camera monopod.
  • Snake stick or use to ward off aggressive critters.
  • Extra reach

Anything Velcro Sticks and Stays

Velcro strips (Pic #3) come in all lengths and even colors.

  • Attach things to packs.
  • Hold filter hose under water by attaching to trek pole tip.
  • Ties for awnings.

Bear Canister (black colored)

Bear canisters (Pic #4) not only protect your food from critters.

  • Fill with water and put in direct sun (solar water heater). Use the warm water to bathe.
  • Stool for tired feet.
  • Table to put things on.

Inflatable Pillow

Sleep (the obvious one).

  • Meditation cushion (zafu).
  • Footrest, soft and relaxing..
  • Flotation device for swimming.

Water Bladders with Hose

These are a great way to stay hydrated on the trail.

  • Emergency cold/hot pack for injuries.
  • Some come with caps as well as hoses. Punch holes in the cap and use it for a shower.

Use some imagination to figure out other multiple use backpacking gear. There are other kinds of multi-purpose gear but part of the fun is figuring them out. Some gear has alternative fun uses too. Headlamps can help make great shadow puppets on the tent wall.
