Reports of bisphane A in water bottles are causing shoppers to look for alternatives. Below are are five brands that are free of polycarbonates.
Recently there have been news reports about how polycarbonates are used in the manufacture of hard-plastic water bottles, and that the chemical bisphane A (BPA) in the plastic can leech into the water, possibly causing negative health effects. Consumers who are concerned about BPA and want to find alternatives to their current bottles do have options when shopping. CamelbakCamelbak now offers four different kinds of water bottles in a variety of colors that do not contain BPA. The bottles are made from a plastic called copolyester polymer, which the company says does not contain the chemical. Some have a bite valve that is made of silicone. Camelbak also says that there is no BPA chemicals used in the manufacture of its reservoir hydration systems. The company has a Frequently Asked Questions section with additional information for consumers. NalgeneThe Nalgene water bottle company has a website where visitors can learn about which products have polycarbonate, as well as what kinds of plastics are in its other bottles. These materials include bottles and containers made with copolyester, HDPE plastic, LDPE, polypropylene, and PET plastic. Nalgene also offers a stainless steel product. The company has decided to phase out its current line of polycarbonate bottles over the next few months. Kleen KanteenKleen Kanteen offers a complete line of stainless steel water bottles in 12, 18, 27, and 40-ounce containers. The bottles are dishwasher safe, and come with a 1-year guarantee. There is even the Kleen Kanteen Sippy Cup, a 12-ounce bottle with a sippy adapter designed for small children as an alternative to plastic baby bottles. SiggMade in Switzerland, SIGG water bottles are made from high-grade aluminum, and are coated inside to prevent leeching into liquid held in the container. The bottles come in several kinds of designs and feature different kinds of lids. SIGG recommends that their bottles are not to be washed in the dishwasher, as the necks are too small for water to get inside to clean them, and over time the exterior paint can wear off. Instead the bottles should be washed by hand with warm water. Determining Which Bottles Have BPAPlastic products generally have a recycle symbol on the product and a number. These numbers range from 1-7, and indicate what kind of plastic has been used in the product. Polycarbonate bottles have the #7 symbol, which is shown on the bottom of the bottle. When shopping, whether online or in the store, read the product information carefully. If still not sure, ask a store salesperson or call the company to resolve the question.
